FIRST   LARNE   INDOOR

BOWLING   CLUB

The qualifying nights of this year's Churches Pairs competition took place on Thursday and Friday evenings the 02 and 03 January 2020.
On Thursday evening Sheelagh and Moria played their tie at St.Cedma's  Halls but unfortunately did not qualify.   On Friday evening Rene and June travelled to Raloo for their tie but lost out by 1 shot.     Again on Friday evening Eamonn and Rodney journeyed to Ballynure for their tie.   They played 2 games and won 2 games thereby booking their place into the finals on Saturday 04 January.    In their quarter final game they lost by 1 shot to a rink form All Saints.

The new 2019/2020 indoor bowling season is now in full swing.

The 2018/2019 season was particularly successful for the club.
We finished 8th out of 15 clubs in the league, which included 6 outright wins, earning us 45.5 points, finishing below Raloo who had 55 points.
In addition we reached the final of the Engravers Shield final, played against Gardenmore IBC at All Saints hall, but unfortunately we were beaten.

22 March 2019
Our Engraver's Shield Final at All Saints last night  was a fitting conclusion to our 2018/2019 indoor bowling season.     Unfortunately, Gardenmore came out worthy winners.   But it has to be said the best team won on the night.   Our players certainly put their hearts into it and in all rinks up to about halfway through the game was very close.    However Gardenmore edged ahead and were never really in any kind of trouble.   Our thanks to All Saints for hosting the final and providing the supper.

14 March 2019
Our last league game of the 2018/2019 season saw us visit close neighbours LB & LTC.  It was an enjoyable game, although less so on the bowling mats.     Truth be told all rinks found the mats difficult, swingy and fast, not at all what we're used to.    Regardless, the match wasn't going to change anything with regard to our league position.     The clubs below us in the league couldn't overtake us and we couldn't progress any higher either.    So it was good to go out and enjoy an evenings bowling with the pressure of getting points put aside.     In the event, Derek Craig Jnr's rink lost as did Willie Robinson's and Rene Gallagher,  Jonathan Millar's rink got 1 point for a rink win.

06 March 2019
Last night we travelled to close neighbours Blue Circle for our penultimate league fixture.
A very close game overall.
First half saw both First Larne rinks in a right old struggle against an "up for it" Blue Circle team.
In the end Tommy Close's rink won by 3 shots and Derek Craig Jnr also won by 3 shots.  So going into the second half we had a 6 shot lead.    And things were just as tight.    In the end Rene Gallagher 's rink lost by 3 shots and Rodney Moore's rink drew.    Overall we won by 3 shots getting 3 points and an additional 2.5 points for 2 rinks getting a win and 1 rink getting a draw.    Very close.

01 March 2019
Our semi-final Engravers Shield match against St.Cedma's was held in First Larne last night.
Having already secured a win against them at their hall in the league, the cup match was eagerly anticipated by all.
In the first half Derek Craig's rink lost by 7 shots against a very strong Kevin Devenney rink, whilst William Robinson ( skipping in the absence of Tommy Close) had an exceptional win of 13 shots against A. Sidwell.
So, going into the 2nd half First Larne were ahead by 6 shots.
The second half saw Jim Steenson's, St.Cedma's rink going ahead against Rene Gallagher after the 8th end by 6 shots.     On the other mat Jonathan Miller's rink had amassed a 17 shot lead on the 10th end.     At this point St.Cedma's conceded the game.     A big "thank you" to everyone at First Larne for an outstanding team performance.
This sets us up for the final against either Islandmagee or Gardenmore on Thursday 21 March at neutral venue All Saints,
And to be fair to St.Cedma's they were very gracious in defeat.

28 February 2019
Our Club AGM will be held in First Larne church, room 5, on Thursday 04 April at 7.30pm.  The next evening Friday 05 April the end of season dinner and prize-giving will take place at Cairndhu Golf Club, 7.00pm for 7.30pm

21 February 2019
We hosted Cairncastle last night.    In the first half Tommy Close's rink had a 1 shot win  over Barry Petticrew in a very tight game.     On the other mat Rene Gallagher's rink lost to the all Kincaid rink.     The second half got off to a good start with both home rinks nosing out in front.    Unfortunately Rodney Moore's rink collapsed going down by 9 shots and Derek Craig's rink narrowly missed a point as they went down by 5 shots in the last end.     On the night, 1 point to First Larne and 6 points to Cairncastle.

15 February 2019
Our visit to Raloo last night produced 2 points.   It was always going to be a hard contest and so it proved to be.    In the first half Tommy Close had a good win against George Woods with Derek Craig Jnr's rink going down to Elizabeth Woods.    In the second half Rene Gallagher's rink  lost to Chris Snoddy and Rodney Moore's rink won against Stephen Bell.    A well earned 2 points on the night.

07 February 2019
Last night we hosted close neighbours Larne & Kilwaughter  in our league fixture.  The first half saw First Larne gain a 9 shot lead, with both June Moore's rink and Rene Gallagher's rink recording wins.    The second half was just as hotly contested with Tommy Close's rink winning by 4 shots and Johnny Millar's rink going down by 1 shot.      6 points out of 7.   Well done to all.

05 February 2019
Congratulations to Rene and June who qualified tonight for the Robertson Pairs final at Craigyhill on Saturday night.      Good luck.

25 January 2019
We visited All Saints last night in our league fixture.     Full credit to them.    We trailed in their wake from start to finish and they fully deserved the full 7 points.   Their drawing ability  was outstanding, particularly from their front end, in all rinks.     Dare I say it " a master class in how to bowl".     Well done to them.

23 January 2019
Good win last night against Blue Circle, at Blue Circle, in the Engravers Shield.
We won overall by 21 shots.
That sets us up for a semi- final match, at home, against St.Cedma's.

Another good win in the league last night at home to Islandmagee.   Rink wins for Tommy Close, Derek Craig Jnr, and Johnny Millar.    Rene's rink was narrowly defeated by 2 shots.     A total of 6 points out of 7.

02 January 2019
Congratulations to Eamonn and Willie who reached the semi-final stages of the Churches Pairs competition.     They lost in their semi-final match to a very strong Gardenmore pair  -  Stephen Young and Dale Bodles.

29 December 2018

Congratulations to Eamonn and Willie who won their Churches Pairs qualifier last night.
Finals night is Tuesday 01 January 2019 @ Gardenmore Halls.

21 December 2018
A very happy Christmas and a happy and Prosperous New Year to everyone.
The first practice of 2019 will be Wednesday 02 January @ 7.30pm
Our next league fixture, of the new year, will be away to St. Cedma's on Tuesday 08 January  (  held at Gardenmore Halls ).
Hard to believe that we are now half way through the current 2018/2019 session.    At present we are sitting joint  6th in the league table, that position probably falters us slightly, in that, several clubs below us have not played as many games as we have.

20 August 2018
The Committee announce the first practice of the new bowling season will take place on Wednesday 29 August @ 7.30pm.     We extend a very warm welcome back to all existing members and would invite anyone who would like to try their hand at bowling to come along and join us.      Everyone will be most welcome.

  03 January  2018
Raloo IBC were our first visitors of the New Year in a quarter final draw of the Wilson Cup.
First Larne got off to a good start in the first half, only trailing the visitors by a few shots.      After the interval the two home rinks made a solid steady start.      Rene Gallagher's rink came out winners, unfortunately Rodney Moore's rink went down by 9 shots.     Overall Raloo won the tie by some 18 shots.       Perhaps it's some comfort to know had it been a league match then we would have got 1.5 points.

06 December 17
Away league fixture at Cairndhu Bowling Club.
Another very close match.
In the first half T Close's rink and J Moore's rink got off to a flying start.    Over the first few ends both rinks edged ahead, taking the lead.       Unfortunately for us
Cairndhu " found their feet" and came back strongly on both rinks.     T Close 's rink lost by 5 shots and J Moore's rink drew 11-11.
The second half started off in a similar pattern to the first half, with Johnny Millar's rink steaming ahead into a commanding lead.   However this lead was cut back
and on the last end with 1 bowl to play Johnny saw himself staring at defeat.     His last bowl was played with some force resulting in a 1 shot win.       Rene's rink
went down by 5 shots.       Overall Cairndhu won the game by 9 shots.

29 November 17
We welcomed Raloo IBC for a league fixture.
The going was tough from the outset.     In the first half,  Tommy Close's rink lost as did Derek Craig Jnr's.
Going into the second half there wasn't a big shot difference separating the two clubs.    However, Rene Gallagher's rink found the going very tough, losing 6 shots in the first end and then losing 4 shots in the second end and a further 2 shots in the third end.    Unfortunately, in the end, Rene's rink lost.      On mat 4 Johnny Millar's rink put on a very credible performance, the game was very even over the 10 ends.      In the end neither side could deliver the decisive bowl which would have secured a win - and so the game
ended in a draw.
First Larne = 0.5 points,    Raloo  =  6.5 points

13 November 17
Visiting our close neighbours Larne & Kilwaughter saw a very close game eventually giving First Larne a victory, earning us 5 points
to their 2 points.
Rink wins for Johnny Millar and Derek Craig Jnr. and rink losses for Rene Gallagher and Tommy Close.
However, a shot difference of 35 to 28 saw us getting 3 additional points.

08 November 17
A great performance from First Larne with a first game win of the 2017/2018 season over LB&LTC.
T Close, S McCullough, S Walsh and M Magill won 10-9
D Craig, J Moore, R Burch and M Nelson lost 6-11
R Gallagher, T Porter, S Smith and V Steenson won 12-7
J Millar, R Moore, J Magill, J Burch drew 10-10
First Larne 38 shots.     LB&LTC 37 shots.

 01 November 17
First Larne  1 point  St Cedma's   6 points
A disappointing result from First Larne's point of view, losing the overall points by just 9 shots.
Tommy Close's rink lost by 4 shots.     Derek Craig Jnr. rink lost by 1 shot.      Johnny Millar lost by 8 shots.   Rene Gallagher's rink won by 4 shots.

First Larne retained the Stinson Shield last night, at Gardenmore, in a thrilling match that went down to the very last bowl.
In the first half Tommy Close's rink (  Margaret Nelson, Ida Woodside, Johnny Magill, Tommy Close )  won 15 - 3.        June Moore's  rink ( Mary Magill, William Marks, Robert Burch,June Moore ) lost 6 - 13.      At the half-way stage First Larne were ahead by 5 shots.
The second half saw Steve McCullough's rink  ( Derek Craig Jnr, Roy Craig, Beryl Stevenson, Steve McCullough ) lose by only 2, going down 10 - 12.     Rodney Moore's rink (Norma Millar, Josie Burch, Valerie Steenson, Rodney Moore )  ended  9 - 9  each, with either side just not managing to get the deciding bowl.
First Larne 40 shots and Gardenmore 37 shots.       Overall we won and retained the Shield by 3 shots.

Delivery of the Club's 2 x 2 tier mobile handling / storage units is expected during the first week in September,  one unit is completed and work on the second unit has started.   The 2 units will each be able to house not only 2 bowling mats each but provision has been made to accommodate 4 fenders, 4 foot delivery mats and jacks.
With a total of 5 indoor bowling mats the Club took an evaluation to see whether we really needed so many.    After some consultation, it was decided a maximum of 4 mats would be sufficient,  committee took a decision to dispose of 1 mat.      This has been acquired and by a private individual from Coleraine.       Advertising the sale of our current single mat roller is underway,  but will only be completed when we take possession of our 2 new units.

The Club made a request to First Larne Presbyterian Church for additional storage space.      It has been a concern of ours for some time,  that the current storeroom is unable to cope with the amount of items  being deposited there.       We are very pleased to advise that this request has been accepted and passed by church committee and a minor revamping of the store area will take place some time in the future.

23 May 2017

The Club is pleased to announce that we have placed an order with Old Style Engineering of Larne for 2 x 2 tier mobile handling / storage units to house our 4 indoor bowling mats.    The handling / storage units are expected within 6 - 8 weeks.      This will greatly assist us in moving and handling our bowling mats.

12 April 2017.     Summer sessions of indoor bowling starts tonight at 7.30pm in the Sports Hall.     The bowling committee felt there was a need for this.     Whilst a lot of people go to their outdoor bowls or engage in golf, this still left some people who did neither.    And, as always we are looking to the future and thinking about building up our membership.      So if you haven't tried bowling before and would like to give it a go, Wednesday nights in the Sports Hall is the place to be.       Coaching for beginners is part of the overall plan.

It is with much saddness, that I have to advise of the death of our Club member John McColm.   John passed away on 05 January.   His funeral will take place on Tuesday 10 January from his home to Roselawn Cemetery. We pass on our condolences to John's wife and family circle.

We are very pleased to advise that our Club has been successful in being awarded a grant of £1,268.00 from the Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland.

This will enable us to purchase 2 x 2 tier purpose-made mobile bowling mat storage / handling units for our 4 indoor bowling mats.     In addition it will allow us to also store 4 fenders and 4 foot mats on each unit.

These acquisitions will eliminate the need for manually handling our bowling mats, which each weigh approximately 7 stone each.
